My Visual Diary - Original Paintings

Artist Statement

I have created art in just about every medium: watercolor, pastel, acrylic, collage, pen and ink, and charcoal.  But my new love is oil paint. The rich colors and buttery consistency are so much fun!

I recently joined a movement of 'daily painters,' though sometimes it is more like 'weekly.'  I like to set up small still life scenes using natural light - often sunlight because I like the dramatic shadows when the sun is low and I like the warm, yellow cast of the light, especially on organic objects.  I start out painting true to form and color in order to refine my skill, but I often jump off and exaggerate light, color and shape, particularly shadow, in order to create interesting compositions and movement.

I try to learn something from every painting, so you'll sometimes see my analysis.  This blog is a way to record the lessons I learn and keep track of my progress.

Happy painting!
